Mrs. Shoemaker was comatose for 71 of her 85 days in-hospital. She doesn't recall anything there, but says that she was treated horribly in the rehab facility where she was admitted approximately 04/22/22, to be weaned off the ventilator for the first 2-1/2 weeks. She was told to defecate in her bed, which she did, because she had diarrhea, and couldn't get up on her own. She was forced to lie in it so much that she became septic from the pressure ulcer that got infected while not being rotated in bed. She was also restrained against her will, and when her husband was allowed in, he released her himself, and told the doctor under no circumstances was she to be restrained again. He was able to stay with her after that, and was able to monitor her treatment. Once she was weaned, she was moved to another floor, where she was treated wonderfully, as she learned to walk, talk, and regain her independence. She was in Brookwood facility for about 2 months, for a total of 6 months of her life being taken from her. She's just grateful to be alive!
