The doctor who intubated my dad wrote in the notes that he was desaturating in the 70s. Neither vital or respiratory records support that claim. He also said dad wasn’t tolerating bipap well. Again, notes said he was. It took me 20 days to fight my way in that hospital. When I got In there my dad had so much fluid buildup it was seeping out of his eyes, mouth and every open wound on his body.

For 58 days, he never got a trach. They stopped doing relevant labs so he could receive individualized care very early on, and was too unstable for a CT after day 1 to properly diagnose his issues. His saturations were in the mid 80’s to upper 90’s the whole 24 hours before they intubated him, gave him remdesivir and extremely high doses of paralytics, sedation and pain meds all which cause respiratory depression.

He got 3 chest tubes, very possibly improperly placed. Meds that have dangerous interactions.  I saw my dad on FaceTime one hour before he was intubated. He was sitting up and looked normal other than being terrified. We consistently begged for additional meds and even submitted a formal request in writing. We were denied.

Atriums policy states that patient/patient advocate has the right to be involved in end of life care. Policy also states that when patient is unconscious they can have an advocate with them. They violated their own policies over and over yet there is no jurisdiction over the hospital. We called every local politician, every attorney in our area. No one cares. Until it hits closer to home of course.

Our family was completely unaware of days 1-19. I have several hours of video and I could write 100 pages of the terror we experienced before the most gentle and loving man I have ever known was ultimately delivered from evil on 10/26/21.
