Karen K.’s Story- They Killed My Dad
Don’t let the age fool you, Donald Gandy had a lot of life left in him. Longevity ran in his family, his brother lived till 102 years old and Donald was still driving and full of life. The only medication he was on was for dry eyes. However that all changed when he took a little fall because he said he didn’t tighten his belt well enough. Donald was getting over a cold he had a week or so before but after the fall he had some cognitive issues so they thought he should go get checked out, maybe he hit his head. His daughter, Karen spoke with him on the phone and said he sounded find. When he got to the hospital the doctor commented that he was on the “tail end of covid.” How he would know that is a mystery. They did a chest x-ray and said his lung were clear but they wanted to keep him a day for observation. Nonetheless, they put him on remdesivir and everything went downhill from there.
On December 25th, they isolated him and moved him to ICU even though Karen said the whole time he sounded and acted fine. Each day the family would zoom him at 6pm and talk with him. She said slowly they watched him die via zoom. Each day the medical director of comfort care would try and push end of life protocol on him and each day, Donald would say: “Im not ready to go,” They wouldn’t let the family in to see him unless he agreed to end of life protocol. As if they wanted him to die. They watched as remdesivir took its toll, his kidneys and heart where shutting down. He had never had kidney or heart problems before and he got his labs done every 6 months, he was a healthy older soft spoken gentleman. One nurse asked him if he wanted to live one more day and he replied yes, but they never said anything to the family until the next morning. Karen got a call while her dad was flat-lining. What exactly happened here? A lot of unanswered questions, but we intend to help Karen and her family to get to the bottom of it. Mr Gandy should still be here.
