My husband was hospitalized on September 28, 2021 at Waverly Health Center in Iowa. He was put on oxygen and was given Remdesivir and other drugs. They transferred him to Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa on October 2, 2021. I was able to see him in Waverly, but I was not allowed to see him in Waterloo.
The first time I saw him at Allen was October 14, 2021 only because he begged them to let me come and see him. I was in total shock with the downward spiral he had taken. He was not coherent and was in obvious distress. I was absolutely heartbroken and that was the moment I actually grasped that he was in critical condition. The nurses brought the teledoc in the room and he was outraged that they hadn’t put Jason in the ICU yet. The nurses said there was no room, but the doctor said to make room. They had him down there in a few hours.
They told me to go home and they would contact me. The children and I talked to him via FaceTime the night before he was ventilated. We talked and he was just working on breathing. It was horrible to see. I kept getting calls that they were going to put him on the ventilator, but then something changed and they said they would wait longer. They did it on Sunday afternoon. The Wednesday after that, he was allowed visitors. Various family members went since they only allowed the same two visitors on the same day.
I was getting calls at various times from the nurses that he was septic and they were trying to fight that on top of everything else. His lungs weren’t healing. His kidneys were shutting down. They called me on the morning of October 29, 2021 to tell me he was not going to make it and it was only a matter of time. I was talked to by a nephrologist saying his kidneys were failing and he was not going to get better.
His other family members and I knew he would not get better. They over drugged him. We said our goodbyes and they took him off the ventilator. He died immediately after. Jason said he always wanted to live forever. He was only 49 years old.
