My husband was diagnosed with Covid around November 21, 2021. We went to acute care at Medical Associates, Dubuque, Iowa, for a Covid test and it was positive. I had him stay at his mom’s house because my son was coming home from college for 4 days and we didn’t want him to get covid.

I called acute care 3x to see if they would see him again because the steroids they gave him didn’t work. He was getting worse. The nurse said they can’t see him unless his oxygen constantly stays under 90 percent.

November 28, 2021, his oxygen was 88% constantly, so I brought him to acute care. They were unhappy that I didn’t bring him in sooner, but I told him that the nurse answering the phone said he has to be worse before we will see him.

The nurse wheeled him right away to the Emergency Room, and from there, they admitted him. While in the emergency room, Dan asked if they could give him Ivermectin and the nurse laughed and said,  “You must be a Trump supporter, and we don’t have junk like that here at the hospital.”

He was quarantined for 6 days at his mom’s house, and after I kissed him and said I’ll see you in a couple of hours, it was 21 days until I got to see him.

On November 29, the doctor gave him the first dose of Remdesivir and another 4 more days of it.   flu vaccine was also given, but they didn’t ask him if he wanted it. If they did, he would have said no because he had a very bad reaction years ago receiving the flu vaccine.

On day 4 of his stay, the doctor already noted that he had bad nutrition. My husband was a runner and therefore, very healthy.

On day 5, they noted that “his liver enzymes were bad, and it was because of the Remdesivir and to monitor the liver.” His heart rate on day 5 would go to 140-150, at times, throughout the day. From that point on, his heart rate would go to the 130’s-160’s throughout his stay. He went in weighing 210 pounds. and died around 160 pounds.

He was on the cannula, high flow, and the bi-pap during his 34-day stay. His pic line was misplaced and they never placed it in the correct position. The blood thinners that he received gave him HIT [Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia].  His score was 4 out of 6. The Toradol he received may have caused kidney injury. Towards the end of his stay, he was anemic and very low on protein. His liver function was deteriorating everyday. His lungs never recovered.

The very last morning that I came to see him the doctor greeted me and said that, “He needs to go.” When I walked into his room, he was catheterized and the color of his urine was dark orange/red. Morphine was given to him throughout his stay, and that was used for his comfort measure.

It was my son’s and my worst day/night of our lives. I never want to see another loved one die this way ever again. The main doctor and the pulmonary doctor never met with me during the 34 days.
