Ashley talks about a few dos and don’ts: Do not give medical or legal advice. Do plan to be available to support the victim, even after the interview process is complete.

Although it may be tempting to do so, it is important to refrain from offering victims legal or medical advice during the course of the recorded interview. What you say or do in your time before or after the interview is between you and the victim you are supporting.

When you adopt a case, many times you are adopting its victim, too. Expect to make friends, networking connections, and be supportive. Your experience, as someone who has already been through this process, is invaluable to the victim, who wants answers and needs to hear kind words of encouragement now that they have realized they are not alone.
