Float: Curious without a real sense of danger, and drawn to any body of water in a semi-tropical climate, Vietnamese children face drowning as a leading cause of death, due to a lack of proper education surrounding water safety and knowledge of basic swimming skills. SPICES will build the resources, the ambition and passion in high school students to solve the underlying causes of these highly preventable tragedies. By transporting lifeguard certified American high schoolers, and using local swimming pools, Float will provide free, easily accessible swimming and water safety lessons to the community’s children. However, this program will go far beyond these lifesaving lessons; Participants from both cultures enrich their education with experiential learning that allows a greater understanding of international diversity and promotes peace and productivity between cultures.
